Keep Smiling With Ali It all began in Maine, Labor Day Weekend 2007 when I suffered a life-changing accident. I broke my neck, severing my spinal cord, in a diving accident. I am a quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair. I was airlifted to Mass General in Boston where I underwent surgery and spent 5 weeks in several different ICU’s. I was then med-flighted to the Shepherd Center, a premier catastrophic rehabilitation center, in Atlanta, Georgia where I spent 3 1/2 months. I weaned off the ventilator and underwent additional surgery which hindered my progress with physical and occupational therapy. When I returned home in mid-January 2008 it was quite difficult. I was sick for many months of 2008 which again delayed my rehabilitation. I am getting stronger and I am participating in physical and occupational therapy at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The process of improvement has been painfully slow and is measured in months and years rather than days and weeks, but improvement is happening! I am looking into a more intense physical rehabilitation program. Unfortunately, due to the unique nature of these programs, in that they do not put limits on your rehab and recovery, insurers and government programs do not cover the costs. There are many required medical supplies and equipment that fall in these gaps too. The costs of my catastrophic injury are immense. The Keep Smiling With Ali Committee will be holding future events to help defray these costs.
I want to thank everyone who came out and supported me on November 21, 2008! Your love and support is felt everyday! Knowing that I have so much support helps me get up and fight on a daily basis. All your help brings me closer to live the life that I was born to live! Please continue to pray and support me! Keep checking back for updates and future events.
